Allergic reaction or cleansing purge? Learn to identify it

Have you noticed that the last product you used caused pimples on your skin? Do you feel that you may have had an allergic reaction to any ingredient? Did you know that there is also a process called purging in which the skin expels dirt?

Stay here and we'll tell you more!

What is purge or purification of the skin?

This process occurs when a product speeds up skin cell turnover, resulting in small open pimples that look like white dots. There are ingredients like retinoids or chemical peels that can cause this.

Normally it usually lasts about two weeks, although sometimes it can last up to six.

That the skin purifies itself in this spontaneous way is neither good nor bad, but it is important to know what product has caused it and thus be able to take appropriate measures; try to introduce that product more slowly and take care of the skin with outbreaks so that the situation does not worsen.

Especially in cases of sensitive skin or skin problems, it is necessary to stop the use of this product temporarily.

To help your skin in the purging process, you can use products with ingredients such as ceramides and hyaluronic acid, comedogenic, or natural products that are not abrasive to your skin.

What is it and how to detect an allergic reaction?

An allergic reaction happens when symptoms of intolerance to an ingredient that we are applying appear on the skin, these symptoms can be irritation, localized rashes, swelling or redness, which is usually accompanied by itching.

Unlike the purge, the allergic reaction is more serious, since we must immediately stop the product that is irritating us, because if we continue using it, it is likely to get worse and we will have to see our doctor.

The mildest allergies usually disappear on their own, when we remove what caused them, but there are ways to help their healing using soothing and decongestant products, such as chamomile, calendula, aloe vera or rosemary.

Now that you know what they are and why these symptoms occur in our dermis, we are going to give you the keys to identify them.

Difference Between Purging and Allergic Reaction

Purge

  1. You have started a new product and your skin is adjusting

  2. The outbreaks appear as pimples or blackheads.

  3. The product you use contains ingredients such as: AHA, BHA, PHA, Retinol, Vit.C and Benzoyl Peroxide, which can stimulate skin purification.

  4. The outbreaks appear in defined areas or in places where you normally have acne.

  5. They disappear in two weeks or less.

Allergic reaction

  1. Spontaneous reaction when using a product that causes reddening of the skin and itching.

  1. Pimples and hives or even inflammation may appear.

  2. The symptoms are constant and do not go away.

  3. By stopping the use of the product causing the reaction, the symptoms improve and are cured.

ATTENTION: If you are in contact with an irritant that causes allergies in the eyes, nose or tongue and you experience respiratory distress, see a doctor immediately .

As we always say, it is important to have the knowledge not to be alarmed, but to act appropriately when our skin shows sudden changes.

We hope this post has helped you understand your skin a little more.

See you in the next post!
